What is the purpose of this test?

Order this Hepatitis B Core Antibody Blood Test, IgM, which detects IgM anti-HBc antibodies to screen for an acute HBV infection. Hepatitis B is a virus that causes liver inflammation. Hepatitis B antibody testing can help individuals determine if they've had it before or are immune. It spreads through body fluids, like blood, and can happen during childbirth, sharing needles for drugs, or unprotected sex. Hepatitis B can be short-term (acute) or long-term (chronic). Most people with acute hepatitis B get better without treatment in a few weeks to six months. However, some people with acute hepatitis B develop chronic hepatitis B, which lasts longer than six months. Chronic hepatitis B can cause severe liver damage, liver failure, or liver cancer.

Hepatitis B core antibodies appear as an individual develops symptoms of hepatitis, and they remain detectable for life. The results of this test are interpreted alongside other tests to assess recovery from a previous HBV infection and to differentiate between acute and chronic infections. This test detects IgM anti-HBc antibodies.
