What is the purpose of this test?
Order this Urine Halides Pre & Post Load Test Kit, which comprehensively assesses iodine sufficiency and the exposure or retention of antagonistic halides (bromine and fluoride). Iodine is an essential element required for the normal function of the thyroid gland and immune system and the integrity of breast tissue. The body doesn’t produce its iodine. Instead, it must obtain iodine through the food we eat, such as:
- Seaweed
- Shrimp and other seafood
- Certain dairy products and other foods fortified with iodine
- Table salt
- Daily multivitamin
Iodine status and metabolism are affected not only by iodine intake, which has decreased significantly, but also by intake and retention of antagonistic halides bromide and fluoride. Bromide and fluoride are non-essential, antagonistic halides that can disrupt iodine homeostasis and function. Antagonistic bromide is abundant in commercially produced baked goods, soft drinks, pesticides, brominated chemicals, and some medications. Primary sources of fluoride include fluoridated water, beverages, toothpaste, mouthwashes, and some medicines.
This test kit is helpful for individuals experiencing issues with the following:
- Fatigue
- Immune Response
- Thyroid Function
- Estrogen Metabolism
When should I order a Urine Halides Pre & Post Load Test Kit?
Individuals may order this test kit if they have experienced symptoms related to iodine insufficiency or retention of bromide and fluoride. Common signs or symptoms of iodine insufficiency may include:
- Swollen thyroid glands
- Lump on the neck
- Weight gain
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Thinning or loss of hair
- Dry skin
- Feeling colder than usual
- Slowed heart rate

For five days before and during the collection process, the patient should avoid taking iodine supplements (other than the loading dose prescribed by their physician), non-essential medications, and products containing iodide/ iodine, such as kelp, fish, and sea vegetables, unless otherwise instructed by their physician. Patients should consult with their physician before discontinuing prescription medications. Female patients should not collect urine during a menstrual period.
Test Results:
5 to 7 business days once the lab receives the specimen. May take longer based on weather, holiday, or lab delays.
