What is the purpose of this test?
The RPR (Rapid Plasma Reagin) Syphilis Blood Test is a blood test used to detect antibodies that are produced by the body in response to the bacterium called Treponema pallidum. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection that can have serious health consequences if left untreated. The RPR test is a quick and easy way to screen for syphilis because it detects antibodies in the blood that are produced in response to the infection.
If the RPR test is positive, then a reflex titer test is performed to determine the level of antibodies present in the blood. The reflex titer test is a more specific test that can help determine whether the infection is active or has been treated in the past. If the titer is high, it may indicate an active infection, and further testing may be necessary to confirm the diagnosis and determine the appropriate treatment.
It is important to note that a positive RPR test does not necessarily mean that a person has syphilis, as other conditions, such as autoimmune diseases and certain types of infections, can also cause a positive result. Therefore, additional tests and a thorough medical evaluation are required to confirm a diagnosis of syphilis.
When should I order an RPR (Rapid Plasma Reagin) Syphilis Blood Test?
Individuals should consider getting an RPR (Rapid Plasma Reagin) Syphilis Blood Test if they experience any of the following symptoms:
- Painful sores or ulcers on or around the genitals, anus, or mouth
- A rash, often on your palms or soles of your feet
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Sore throat
It's important to note that not everyone with syphilis will experience symptoms, which is why it's important to get tested regularly if you are sexually active.
Please see the qualitative Rapid Plasma Reagin Test page for more details about syphilis, its diagnosis, and testing procedures.
