What is the purpose of this test?

The Omega-3 Index Complete Blood Spot test evaluates the levels of essential fatty acids in your blood, which play a significant role in your overall health. These fatty acids are crucial for brain function, reducing inflammation, and supporting heart health. The test provides a detailed analysis of both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, as well as other important fats in your body. By measuring these levels, it helps you understand your fatty acid balance and whether dietary adjustments or supplementation may be needed to improve your health.

In addition to the omega-3 index, this test also evaluates the ratios of omega-6 to omega-3, which can be an indicator of inflammation and overall cardiovascular health. Imbalances in fatty acid levels are linked to a variety of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, inflammatory disorders, and even cancer. Identifying these imbalances early can help prevent these conditions and improve overall wellness.

The Omega-3 Index Complete Blood Spot - Mosaic Diagnostics Test Kit includes:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Alpha-Linolenic, Eicosapentaenoic, Docosapentaenoic, Docosahexaenoic – essential for heart health, brain function, and reducing inflammation.
  • Omega-6 Fatty Acids: Linoleic, Gamma-Linolenic, Eicosadienoic, Dihomo-g-linolenic, Arachidonic, Docosatetraenoic, Docosapentaenoic – important for immune function, but can contribute to inflammation when imbalanced.
  • Monounsaturated Fatty Acids: Palmitoleic, Oleic, Eicosenoic, Nervonic – support cell membrane integrity and overall cellular health.
  • Saturated Fatty Acids: Myristic, Palmitic, Stearic, Arachidic, Behenic, Lignoceric – provide energy, but excessive amounts can affect heart health.
  • Trans Fatty Acids: Palmitelaidic, Elaidic, Linoelaidic, Trans Fat Index – linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease when consumed in excess.
  • Ratios: AA:EPA, Omega-6:Omega-3 – important for understanding inflammation and cardiovascular risk.
