What is the purpose of this test?
Order this Haptoglobin Blood Test, which measures haptoglobin levels in the blood to screen for hemolytic anemia. The liver produces a protein called haptoglobin, which attaches to a specific type of protein in the red blood cells called hemoglobin. Hemoglobin carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body and is mainly located within red blood cells. However, small amounts of hemoglobin circulate in the bloodstream. When haptoglobin binds with hemoglobin in the bloodstream, it forms the haptoglobin-hemoglobin complex, which is cleared from the bloodstream and eliminated by the liver.
When red blood cells are harmed, they release more hemoglobin into the bloodstream, increasing the haptoglobin-hemoglobin complex's clearance. If the liver cannot produce enough haptoglobin to balance this increase, it may decrease haptoglobin levels. A low haptoglobin level could indicate an issue with red blood cells, such as hemolytic anemia, where red blood cells are destroyed faster than they can be replaced. This test helps identify whether your symptoms are caused by a different type of anemia or a blood disorder.
When should I order a Haptoglobin Blood Test?
Individuals may order this test if they have experienced symptoms related to hemolytic anemia. Common signs or symptoms of this condition include:
- Fatigue
- Pale skin
- Shortness of breath
- Increased heart rate
- Jaundice
- Dark-colored urine
