What is the purpose of this test?
The ENA (Extractable Nuclear Antigens) Antibody Blood Test Panel is designed to identify autoantibodies in your blood that are associated with autoimmune diseases, such as Sjogren’s Syndrome, Lupus, and Scleroderma. By testing for specific antibodies, this panel helps healthcare providers understand whether an autoimmune condition is present and which type it may be. Early detection of these antibodies can support timely diagnosis and treatment, improving management of symptoms and overall health.
This test includes slightly different components depending on the lab performing it. The LabCorp ENA Antibody Panel includes tests for RNP Antibodies, SCL-70, SSA, and SSB. In contrast, the other ENA Antibody Blood Test Panel also tests for Anti-nuclear Antibodies (ANA) in addition to SCL-70, SSA, and SSB. Both versions provide critical information, but the inclusion of ANA in the Other Lab panel adds a broader perspective on autoimmunity.
The ENA Antibody Blood Test Panel includes:
- RNP Antibodies: Detects autoantibodies associated with connective tissue disorders.
- Scleroderma 70 (SCL-70): Found in about 60% of people with Scleroderma, helping to identify this condition.
- Sjogren Anti-SSA (Ro): Positive in about 75% of people with Sjogren Syndrome, also linked to Lupus and Scleroderma.
- Sjogren Anti-SSB (La): Positive in about 60% of people with Sjogren Syndrome, also linked to Lupus and Scleroderma.
- Anti-nuclear Antibody (ANA) (Not Included with LabCorp): Detects a wide range of autoantibodies commonly seen in autoimmune disorders.
Who should get this test?
- Individuals experiencing symptoms of autoimmune diseases, such as joint pain, dry eyes, or skin rashes.
- Those with a family history of autoimmune conditions like Lupus, Sjogren’s Syndrome, or Scleroderma.
- Patients with inconclusive results from other diagnostic tests seeking more specific markers.
- Anyone advised by their healthcare provider to screen for connective tissue disorders.
When should I order an ENA Antibody Blood Test Panel?
Individuals may consider ordering this test if they have symptoms or concerns related to autoimmune diseases. Symptoms to consider:
- Persistent joint pain, swelling, or stiffness.
- Chronic dry eyes or dry mouth.
- Unexplained fatigue or weakness.
- Skin issues, such as rashes or thickening.
