What is Cardiovascular Disease?
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), also known as atherosclerosis (ASCVD), starts in childhood and manifests as a disease later in life. CVD is inflammation of the arteries caused by plaque buildup over time. This plaque buildup restricts the flow of oxygen-rich blood throughout the body, eventually leading to a severe condition such as a heart attack or stroke. According to the World Health Organization, heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death globally, more than all cancers. Recommendations for CVD screening with a standard lipid panel vary, with some expert organizations recommending screening as early as 20 years old. However, patients with increased risk factors for CVD may require earlier and more frequent screenings.
What is the purpose of this test?
Order this Cardiovascular Risk Profile to assess standard and advanced biomarkers to aid in the early detection and risk factor modification of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Although traditional lipid panels calculate total cholesterol levels, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides to evaluate an individual's risk of CVD, they do not fully assess their overall health. Studies have shown that advanced cardiac panels with additional biomarkers may provide clinical insight and help develop targeted therapies.
Recent studies have shown that approximately half of all patients with normal cholesterol levels have underlying heart risks due to arterial inflammation. Inflammation can damage the arteries, restricting blood flow throughout the body and eventually resulting in a severe condition like a heart attack or stroke. Therefore, Doctor's Data has developed the Cardiovascular Risk Profile by combining the best conventional and functional laboratory biomarkers. This profile evaluates lipoprotein-associated phospholipase-A2 (PLAC®), oxidized LDL, small dense LDL, and Lp(a), which are more elevated in CVD patients and associated with the severity of CVD. This profile also includes thirteen primary and secondary risk factors evaluated to provide actionable information at a tremendous value.
Individuals may order this profile to assess the following conditions:
- Cardiovascular Disease
- Lipid/Lipoprotein Profile
- Heart Attack
- Peripheral Arterial Disease
- Stroke
- Cardioprotective Nutrient Status
- Inflammation
When should I order a Cardiovascular Risk Profile, Serum?
Individuals may order this Cardiovascular Risk Profile if they have an increased risk of developing CVD. Cardiovascular risk factors include:
- Increasing age
- Family history of early cardiovascular disease
- Insulin resistance
- Liver disease
- High cholesterol from a prior test
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes or prediabetes
- Overweight or obese
- Smoking cigarettes
- Unhealthy diet
- Not enough physical activity
Preparation:
Ship specimens Monday through Friday only. No fasting is required. If possible, take medications or supplements after collection. Check with your physician before stopping medications.
Test Results:
5-7 business days once the lab receives the specimen. May take longer based on weather, holiday, or lab delays.
